Featured Seller – Sarabuk

Posted by digtheearth on Monday, October 5th

Hello! My featured seller this week is a talented silversmith, who is based very close to my home patch in West Yorkshire. Beautiful buttercups and African inspired graphic shapes abound…

Sarabuk

Introduce yourself…

My name is Sara Bukumunhe and I make silver jewellery from my cellar workshop in Bradford. I am married to Andy and we have two children, Hope and Nye. I also work part time in a jewellery gallery and help out with bookkeeping for my husband.

How did it all start?

It started with an evening class over ten years ago, purely as a hobby. One of the first things I made was my wedding ring, so there was a bit of pressure to get it right and made on time! I remember I was still filing it the night before the big day. When I left my job to work with my husband and have my second child 5 years later I started making jewellery for others and started selling to friends and family, and it’s grown from there.

I spent the last 2 years completing a Foundation Degree in Art and Design Enterprise which taught me the basics of starting and running a Jewellery business. I have my jewellery in two galleries at the moment, Art Parade in Saltaire, Bradford and Divinity in the Manchester Craft and Design Centre. I’m planning to approach many more in the next few months.

Have you always sold online?

No – this year is the first time I have started selling online and only set up my website a few months ago, about the same time as I set up my Coriandr shop. I also do the occasional craft fair.

What inspires you?

Anything! From nature to my children’s drawings! At the moment I love making jewellery based around flowers and I find the naïve simplicity of these appeal to a wide range of people.

If you had to pick a favourite from all your creations, what would it be?

My favourite is my stacking ring because it’s so versatile. You can wear as many or as few rings, or separate them onto different fingers, and I make different motifs to go with them such as hearts, flowersdots in gold or silver, or a clients own design. You can have a different look everyday!

What music is playing in the background right now?

I tend to have Radio 2 on most of the day, til 2pm when I change to Radio 4 for the Archers and play of the day. Then its time for the school run. I’ve also recently discovered Spotify which means I can indulge in my guilty pleasure in the seclusion of my workshop – old musicals!

Do you have a favourite seller or item on Coriandr at the moment?

I was recently lucky enough to meet Mich Yasue from myfuroshiki at a local craft fair. I love the different and very unique ways of wrapping absolutely anything using fabric and the best bit is the wrapping is recyclable. Even my 9 year old daughter uses them for her friends presents.

What does the future hold?

Hopefully getting my jewellery accepted in several galleries nationwide and making lots of Coriandr sales!

If you could have a new feature on Coriandr, what would it be?

Like some other featured sellers, I would like to know when someone has made me a favoutite. I also think the “Search by Seller” should be more prominent, maybe with an input box directly below it. I didn’t know it was there! And finally… I would like to be able to scroll through items in a shop without going back to the shop homepage each time. Is three too many?

Thank you Sara, it’s great to find out more about you and your beautiful jewellery. You can read more about the featured products by clicking the photos above for a direct link to Sarabuk’s Coriandr shop.
